The day before Hurricane Irene was set to blow through New York, we found two more Black Swallowtail caterpillars on the anise plant in the yard, and brought them inside. They were named Batten and Hatch. As the rain came down in fits and spurts and heavy winds whipped the trees outside, Batten, the largest one, went calmly about turning into a chrysalis while Hatch watched, and I drew. Here's our hurricane day:
"Sarcone-Roach displays a discipline not always seen in books about the enviornment; she allows her theme of reuse and recycling to emerge naturally from a fine story... Illustrations, unexpectedly cozy-looking, emphasize the story's tone. Structurally and artistically, the book recalls Virginia Lee Burton's The Little House..." - Horn Book (Starred Review)
"Sarcone-Roach (The Secret Plan)... effectively portrays her heroine as an endearing, can-do machine" - Publisher's Weekly
The Secret Plan
"Adorable character design and superb visual storytelling highlight an endearingly silly tale." - Cookie Magazine
"This anthology does an excellent job of uniting the creativity of words, art, and innovation. It will spark children's curiosity and hold their interest." - School Library Journal
'Call of the Wild'
"Call of the Wild combines beautiful, scratchy animation with the perfect balance of incomprehensibility and humor." - San Francisco Weekly. "The best square-dancing bat sequence in the history of cinema." - Cinematexas Film Festival
